Set Design
Because The Creature is derived from the radio play concept (from our podcasts in 2006 and 2007), the set design is rather minimal and functional, a canvas for the lighting and sound, which are going to be quite complex. I mentioned sound designer Cliff Caruthers’s wizardry in a previous post, and you’ll see here in Michael Locher’s set design a number of desk and hanging microphones.
Well, I hope you can see it, anyway. This view also gives you an idea of the playing spaces–all actors are on stage the whole time.
What these drawings don’t show, of course, are the props and other dressing. At the early production meeting, the designers had ideas for vacuum tubes, antique anatomical drawings, old nautical equipment–or anything that looked strange and rather steampunky. (Don’t get excited; it’s not a steampunk Frankenstein–although I’m sure if you’re into steampunk, you’ll probably like the story.) We’ll see in a couple of days what our excellent technical director/carpenter/propmaster Jim O’Sullivan will come up with. We open one week from tomorrow!
